Intro to Sashiko - Japanese Embroidery

with Jess Way

Thursday 20th November 7pm - 9pm
£50

“Sewing is a way to mark our existence on cloth: patterning our place in the world, voicing our identity, sharing something of ourselves with others and leaving the indelible evidence of our presence in stitches held fast by our touch.”

Join textiles artist Jess Way for a relaxed evening of exploring the traditional Japanese art of decorative stitch, creating beautifully intricate patterns on fabrics. We will begin by learning the fundamentals of Sashiko, including the history, methods and cultural significance of this craft. We’ll then spend the evening learning a range of different techniques, creating samples throughout the session that explore pattern and how Sashiko is used for mending.

All materials will be supplied, however if you'd like to bring along a pair of holey jeans/ clothes to practice your Sashiko on, this is very welcome!

During the session, you are invited to sit with a cup of tea and a slice of homemade cake while enjoying the woodfire in the studio.

No experience necessary - all levels are welcome!
